In following the lead set by both established and emerging "marine tourism" markets like Australia and India, travel chiefs in the Maldives claim that conservation and protection are set to be the key factors in bringing visitors closer to the country's unique underwater inhabitants such as whale sharks.

The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) has recently returned from a successful expedition in Papua, Indonesia. One would be forgiven for thinking, "Isn't Papua a long way from the Maldives?!" But followers of the MWSRP will know that their work has become Indian Ocean basin wide.
